Athletes’ Rights & Responsibilities
The EWF Athletes Commission supports the IOC Declaration on Athletes’ Rights and Responsibilities. Below is an overview of the key rights and responsibilities that guide life and competition in sport.
Athletes’ Rights
Non-discrimination
Practise sport and compete without discrimination based on race, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, disability, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other immutable status.
Fair & clean environment
Be part of a transparent, fair and clean sporting environment that fights against doping and competition manipulation, and provides transparent judging, selection and qualification processes, and appropriate training and competition schedules.
Clear information
Access general information on athlete and competition-related matters in a timely and clear manner.
Education & dual career
Access education on sports-related matters and, where practicable, work or study while actively training and competing.
Income & image
Leverage opportunities to generate income in relation to your sporting career, name and likeness, while recognising applicable intellectual property, event rules and the Olympic Charter.
Gender equality
Fair and equal gender representation in sport.
Health & safety
Protection of mental and physical health, including a safe training and competition environment and protection from abuse and harassment.
Representation
Elected athlete representation within sporting organisations of the Olympic Movement.
Report concerns
Report unethical behaviour without fear of retaliation.
Privacy & data
Privacy, including protection of personal information.
Freedom of expression
Freedom of expression, in line with the values and rules of sport.
Due process
Due process, including the right to a fair hearing within a reasonable time by an independent and impartial panel, the right to request a public hearing and the right to an effective remedy.
Athletes’ Responsibilities
Live Olympic values
Uphold the Olympic values and adhere to the Fundamental Principles of Olympism.
Compete clean
Respect the integrity of sport and compete as a clean athlete, by not doping and not manipulating competitions.
Report unethical behaviour
Act in accordance with the IOC Code of Ethics and be encouraged to report unethical behaviour, including instances of doping, competition manipulation, prohibited discrimination and abuse and harassment.
Respect rules & laws
Comply with applicable national laws and the rules of qualification processes and competitions, of the sport and of the relevant sporting organisation, as well as the Olympic Charter.
Respect others
Respect the rights and well-being of others and do not discriminate against athletes, entourage, volunteers or anyone in the sporting environment; refrain from political demonstrations in competitions, competition venues and ceremonies.
Support solidarity
Respect the solidarity principle of the Olympic Movement, which allows assistance and support to be provided among athletes and members of the Olympic Movement.
Be a role model
Act as a role model, including by promoting clean sport.
Know your duties
Inform yourself and be aware of your responsibilities.
Cooperate with hearings
Participate in hearings when requested to do so and provide truthful testimony in such proceedings.
Take part in elections
Participate and vote in athlete representatives’ elections.
